The Deputy Permanent Representative of the United Republic of Tanzania to the United Nations Office in Geneva, Ambassador Dr. Hoyce Temu, held a bilateral meeting with the Deputy Permanent Representative of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Ms. Shahad Matar, earlier today.
The meeting, which took place at the UAE Mission in Geneva, was held in a warm and cordial atmosphere reflecting the excellent and growing bilateral relations between Tanzania and the UAE.
Central to their discussion was the strengthening of multilateral cooperation between the two countries in Geneva. Both Ambassadors underscored the importance of continued collaboration and mutual support within the various international organizations and mechanisms based in Geneva, including the UN Human Rights Council, and other humanitarian and development bodies.
A key agenda item was the upcoming Universal Periodic Review (UPR) session. Ambassador Dr. Temu briefed her counterpart on Tanzania's preparations and ongoing national efforts to promote and protect human rights. The UPR is a unique peer-review mechanism of the Human Rights Council where the human rights record of each UN Member State is reviewed every four and a half years.
Ms. Matar reaffirmed the UAE's commitment to constructive engagement and expressed her country's support to Tanzania during the upcoming review.
The two diplomats also discussed cooperation in the area of water and sustainable development. They exchanged views on the preparations for the UN Water Conference 2026, which will be co-hosted by the United Arab Emirates and is scheduled to take place in Abu Dhabi in early December 2026.
Ambassador Temu commended the UAE for its leadership in hosting this critical global conference and confirmed Tanzania's participation at a High-Level meeting.
She noted that water and sanitation remain a top priority for Tanzania as the country accelerates implementation of its national development plans.
The 2026 Conference is a follow-up to the historic 2023 UN Water Conference and aims to accelerate the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6) on clean water and sanitation for all, along with other water-related goals. Tanzania, with its vast freshwater resources including the Great Lakes, has a key stake in global water governance.
Both sides agreed to maintain close communication and coordination in the lead-up to both the UPR session and the Water Conference, with a view to achieving successful outcomes for both countries and the wider multilateral system.
The meeting reaffirmed the shared commitment of Tanzania and the UAE to multilateralism, international solidarity, and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
