Zanzibar, July 09, 2026– The Ruling Party, Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) and ACT-Wazalendo have signed a unity agreement, paving the way for the implementation of a Government of National Unity in Zanzibar.
The agreement was signed today at the State House Grounds in Zanzibar, following the Joint Statement of the Political Accord between the two parties.
The President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi said the deal demonstrates the commitment of political leaders to prioritize national interests. He noted that it will strengthen peace, unity, solidarity and development in Zanzibar.
President Dr. Mwinyi stressed that the Government will continue to work with all stakeholders to ensure the process upholds stability, good governance and sustainable development.
The President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, also commended the accord. She said it opens a new chapter in strengthening unity, stability and solidarity among the people of Zanzibar, and is a sign of political maturity.
The National Chairman of ACT-Wazalendo, Othman Masoud Othman, congratulated President Dr. Mwinyi for advancing the reconciliation process. He said the agreement paves the way for lasting solutions to political challenges in Zanzibar.
The event was attended by the Vice President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Ambassador Dr. Emmanuel John Nchimbi; Former Presidents of Zanzibar, Dr. Amani Abeid Karume and Dr. Ali Mohamed Shein; the Second Vice President of Zanzibar, Hemed Suleiman Abdulla; leaders of political parties, religious leaders, government officials from both the Union and Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar, Heads of Defense and Security Organs, Ambassadors, representatives of International Organizations, and members of the public.
