IPU LEADERSHIP MEETS SPEAKER ZUNGU IN NEW YORK, RECEIVES ASSURANCE OF TANZANIA’S READINESS TO HOST 153RD ASSEMBLY IN ARUSHA

New York, USA– The Speaker of the Parliament of the United Republic of Tanzania, Hon. Musa Azzan Zungu, MP, has assured the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) that Tanzania is fully ready to host the 153rd IPU Assembly scheduled for October 2026 in Arusha.
Hon. Zungu made the assurance during a meeting with the IPU President, Hon. Dr. Tulia Ackson, MP, and the IPU Secretary General, Ambassador Anda Filip in New York, USA.
The meeting focused on reviewing the status of preparations, logistical arrangements, and overall readiness ahead of the global parliamentary gathering.
The Speaker expressed satisfaction with the work of the National Organizing Committee that has been coordinating the event.
All logistical, protocol and security arrangements are progressing according to plan, and that Tanzania is committed to delivering a world-class Assembly that reflects Tanzanian hospitality and efficiency.
Hon. Zungu emphasized that hosting the Assembly is a matter of national pride and a key opportunity to strengthen Tanzania’s role in global parliamentary diplomacy.
The Assembly will serve as an important platform for dialogue, cooperation and finding solutions to the challenges facing the world today. Tanzania is honored to welcome Speakers, Members of Parliament and delegates from across the globe to Arusha, a city widely recognized for peace and diplomacy.
The IPU Secretary General, Ambassador Anda Filip, also commended Tanzania for the progress made in the preparations. He reaffirmed the IPU Secretariat’s continued support and partnership with the Parliament of Tanzania to ensure the success of the Assembly.
The 153rd IPU Assembly is expected to attract more than 1,500 participants, including Speakers of Parliament, Members of Parliament, and delegates from the IPU’s 180 member parliaments and 15 associate members.
The agenda for the Assembly will cover a wide range of global issues. Key topics include climate action, peace and security, technological governance, human rights, gender equality, and the role of parliaments in accelerating the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. The program will feature plenary debates, committee meetings, and bilateral engagements among delegations.
Arusha, often referred to as the 'Geneva of Africa', was selected as the host city due to its strong international reputation as a center for diplomacy, peace, and international conferences.
The city has a proven track record of hosting major global meetings, including sessions of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and various United Nations and African Union summits.
The Government of Tanzania has indicated that the Assembly will bring significant benefits to the host city and to the country. Expected benefits include a boost to tourism, hospitality services, and cultural exchange. The event will also showcase Tanzania’s infrastructure and its capacity to host large international gatherings.
