The United Republic of Tanzania and the People's Republic of China have agreed to deepen cooperation in the mining sector, with a focus on modernizing operations, expanding geological research, and building local capacity.
The agreement was reached today during bilateral talks between Tanzania's Minister of Minerals, Hon. Anthony Mavunde, MP, and China's Deputy Minister of Natural Resources, Hon. Dr. Xu Dachun, held at the Government Conference Center in Tianjin.
Speaking after the meeting, Hon. Mavunde said the two governments will work together to apply modern mining technology and improve systems for the issuance and management of mineral licenses. He noted that China, through the China Geological Survey, has committed to build the capacity of Tanzanian professionals in geology and in the interpretation of mineral exploration data.
"The vision of our President, Her Excellency Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, is to see the mining sector grow and make a greater contribution to the national economy. That is why she has placed the sector at the top of the development agenda, with particular emphasis on geological research to increase productivity and ensure that Tanzanians benefit directly from our mineral resources," Hon. Mavunde stated.
He further announced that with grant support from China, the two countries will undertake a high-resolution airborne geophysical survey in the Central Block. The survey will cover the regions of Dodoma, Tabora, Singida, and Shinyanga. The data generated is expected to identify new mineral potential and guide investment decisions.
On his part, Dr. Xu Dachun, who also serves as President of the China Geological Survey, thanked Tanzania for participating in the China Mining Conference. He reaffirmed China's commitment to continue supporting Tanzania through the exchange of experience and technology.
"Cooperation between Tanzania and China is of great strategic importance. Tanzania has vast investment opportunities, while China brings advanced technology and capital. This partnership is well positioned to deliver tangible benefits to the people of both nations," Dr. Dachun said.
