Tanzania has accepted an invitation to be the guest of honour at the opening of the Africa Bee Expo 2026 to be held in Algiers, Algeria, from 3-6 September, 2026.
Speaking to Algerian television journalists at the Tanzanian Embassy in Algiers, Ambassador Mobhare Matinyi said the Minister of Natural Resources and Tourism, Hon. Dr. Ashatu Kijaji, will open the exhibition on behalf of the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania.
Ambassador Matinyi said Hon. Minister Dr. Kijaji will pay an official visit to Algeria leading a delegation of senior government officials and experts as well as stakeholders from the private sector who are involved in the whole industry of beekeeping in the country.
Ambassador Matinyi said the government attaches special importance to the beekeeping sector as it employs about two million people in the country and generates US$77.5 million (205 Tanzania billion shillings) per year from the export of honey and beeswax to various countries around the world.
Citing government statistics, Ambassador Matinyi said Tanzania is currently the second largest producer of honey in Africa and ranks tenth globally and has the opportunity to expand, with the potential to reach 9.2 million beehives capable of producing 138,000 tonnes of honey and 9,200 tonnes of beeswax per year.
Earlier, the Chairman of the Algerian institution organizing the exhibition, Fatah Benchouia, told reporters that apart from the good bilateral cooperations exisiting between Algeria and Tanzania, the main reason for inviting Tanzania to officiate at the exhibition is its success in the beekeeping sector, where it produces 34,000 tonnes of honey per year compared to Algeria’s 7,300 tonnes.
Mr. Benchouia was accompanied by the Chairman of the Scientific Council of the Africa Bee Expo, Dr. Abdelmadjid Bouchareb, as well as the President and Chief Executive Officer of the World Trade Centre in Algeria, Mr. Ahmed Tibaoaoui.
The exhibition is being held for the fourth time in Algeria and Tanzania hopes to showcase its achievements in this sector and learn from beekeepers and producers of bee products in other countries as well.
